eMethods is short for electronic methods – a quick and easy way to obtain packaged application solutions from Agilent or to share your own personal applications. It’s a process that can greatly improve your laboratory’s productivity. eMethod enables you to:
- Electronically export existing methodologies to new instrumentation
Agilent’s eMethod process allows you to package any 5973 series MSD method and export it to an Agilent 5975 series MSD, thus enabling you to bring a new GC/MS instrument online in the shortest possible time.
- Maximize instrument productivity
Whether you have multiple GC/MS systems in the same laboratory or across the world, the Agilent eMethod process makes sharing and standardizing methodologies across your organization as easy as e-mailing an attachment, and analytical separation can be easily duplicated on multiple systems thus maximizing the productivity of each GC/MS.
- Electronically import new Agilent application solutions
No more manual entering of method parameters. Agilent’s integrated eMethod process allows you to download any new Agilent eMethod application solution from the Agilent Web site and import that method to your Agilent 5975 MSD or 5973 series MSD and receive the entire method without any manual editing errors.
Only Agilent can enable the direct transfer of instrument parameters from an existing 5973 series MSD to a 5975 series MSD. To export an existing 5973 series MSD method, you must have MSD Productivity ChemStation software version [D.02.00] or higher.
Over time, Agilent will continue to provide free downloadable eMethods for a variety of applications for the environmental, food safety, pharmaceutical, and forensic/drug testing markets. |

Available eMethods
Download Instructions To download an eMethod, click the eMethod Download link associated with the application of interest in the table below. When instructed, select the location where the executable file will be copied to on your PC’s hard drive or any location you specify. Once the download is complete, locate the executable file in the directory to which it was saved and double-click it to automatically extract the eMethod file (.emeth). You may then import the eMethod to your GC/MSD system as instructed below.
Note: MSD Productivity ChemStation Revision D.02.00 or higher is required for the eMethod export and import capabilities.
Import Instructions Before importing the eMethod, complete the following steps:
- You must have the target GC/MSD system connected to the MSD Productivity ChemStation where you are importing the eMethod.
- You must load a method on the target GC/MSD system, with a tune file that can be used as the basis of the tune file for the method you are importing.
In the MSD Productivity ChemStation Instrument Control window, click on the "Method"” menu and select "Import eMethod." Follow the on-screen directions to import your downloaded eMethod. Once the import process completes, your eMethod will be available on your GC/MSD system.
Note: Any example data files (.d) included with the eMethod will reside in the imported method directory (.m).
Please remember, while any Agilent GC/MSD ChemStation eMethod can be imported to, and run on, the target GC/MSD system, only instruments configured with similar instrument components (i.e. similar injectors, inlets, column types and dimensions, and ovens) can be expected to duplicate the original results.
