Components Analysis
As greater performance demands are put on components such as disk drives and printed circuit boards, the tolerance level for micro-contamination leading to failure is very low. Volatile organic compounds, from sources such as adhesives, may condense on the surface of the components and reduce the effectiveness of the device.
Agilent’s solutions for component analysis
Using thermal desorption to trap volatile and semi-volatile substances off the surface of semiconductor devices such as disk drives and circuit boards, alleviates the need for sample preparation. Agilent works closely with two suppliers of thermal desorption systems: CDS, USA, and Gerstel, Germany. Through these alliances, Agilent can offer complete solutions for trapping volatile materials and transporting them to an Agilent GC-MS for analysis.
Gerstel Thermo Desorption System (TDS)
The TDS 2 thermo desorption system from Gerstel, Germany, is a multifunctional system for analyzing volatile and semi-volatile substances trapped on an adsorbent and for direct thermal extraction of volatile substances from solids without sample preparation. The CIS functions as a cryotrap, focusing and concentrating the components to be determined, and then transferring them to a capillary column for analysis by GC-MS. Using a combination of cryogenics and high flow-rate desorption, compounds from light gases to C40+ boiling point can be analyzed. With the addition of the TDS A autosampler, the TDS 2 becomes a fully automatic thermal desorption system that can analyze up to 20 samples in one sequence. In addition, automated solventless extraction systems using Solid Phase Micro Extraction and Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction are available.

CDS 6500 Bulk Dynamic Headspace Autosampler
The CDS Bulk Dynamic Headspace Autosampler is a fully automated instrument for performing dynamic headspace of large or irregularly shaped sample materials. Up to 16 sample compartments (sixteen 38-mm vessels, or eight 38-mm vessels plus four 95-mm vessels) may be heated and purged into the built-in trap/concentrator for unattended analysis. Sample compartments are individually heated to 300 ºC using a Teflon sealing ring.
The autosampler incorporates a complete sample concentrator for control of sample time, temperature and carrier flow. Steps include purge, trap, dry, backflush trap desorption and trap back-to-vent. All times and temperatures are controlled through easy-to-use menu driven programming. Interface to the Gas Chromatograph includes GC-ready sensing and remote start. The system includes a heated transfer line to the gas chromatograph, GC injection port, and trap injection port for syringe injections.
