469 (CAD)
Description:

This course introduces the most commonly employed tools used in identifying unknown compounds from their mass spectra. Students will reinforce learned interpretation tools by solving a number of problems. The emphasis of this course is primarily calculational and students should bring a calculator as an aid in problem solving.

Outline:
Nomenclature and Definitions
Rings + Double Bonds
Interpretation Procedure
Isotopic Abundances
Logical Neutral Losses
Problems
Prerequisites:
A working knowledge of a modern GC-MS system is assumed. Exposure to sophomore college chemistry is desirable.
Equipment: Please bring a calculator.
Student Profile: This course is designed for the student who operates a mass spectrometer in the SCAN mode to obtain qualitative information and who desires an alternative to relying solely on spectral library searching for identifying unknown compounds.
