This course is designed to introduce the student to the techniques necessary to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis using a quadrupole GC-MS system. This is a lecture-only course which emphasizes student participation through extensive class exercises focused on the total analysis of an unknown sample.

Outline:

Day One: GC-MS Data Structure; Chemistry Review; MS Hardware and Tuning
Day Two: Gas Chromatography Review; GC-MS Interfaces; Scan Data Acquisition; Spectrum Interpretation; Library Searching
Day Three: Quantitative Analysis; Selected Ion Monitoring; Calibration and Calibration Methods

Prerequisites:

Practical Gas Chromatography (R1915A) or equivalent.

Equipment:

None

Student Profile:

A student experienced in GC theory and practice but new to the use of a mass spectrometer as a GC detector.
