Sensitive Analysis of Bisphenol A in Polycarbonates using HPLC and Fluorescence Detection

Content of Bisphenol A in two different polycarbonates
Bisphenol A is used as an antioxidant for softeners, fungicide and as an intermediate during production of polycarbonates, epoxids, phenol resins and dyes.  Its use in consumer products has received considerable interest, since it is an endocrine disruptor which may lead to negative health effects. In this application, Bisphenol A was analyzed using RP-HPLC with both diode array and fluorescence detectors.  The diode array detection yields qualitative information via a spectrum which can be used as an identification tool in combination with retention time.  The fluorescence detector provides quantitation at 10 times the sensitivity of diode array detection.  In the figure, the content of Bisophenol A is shown in two different polycarbonates.
