Potential fire risk with old Edwards E2M1.5 rough pumps

Service Serial Numbers:
US00000000-US99999999

There is a potential fire risk with older versions of the Edwards E2M1.5 rough pumps (G1099-8X023/4) attached to 5973A family of MSDs.

To Be Performed By: Agilent-Qualified Personnel

Parts Required:

None

Situation:
We have become aware of a potential fire risk associated with an old version of the Edwards E2M1.5 rough pump. This type of pump is used as the foreline vacuum pump on the 5973A family of MSDs. The potential risk is caused by a failure in the pump motor capacitor, causing possible fire damage to the pump motor and, surrounding equipment. The capacitor, at issue, can be found on pumps manufactured prior to March 1999 with a pump serial number < 996091640.

Note: The first two digits of the serial number from Edwards indicates the year it was manufactured. "99" = 1999, "00" = 2000 etc.. In the case of a pump with "0X" as the first two digits is actually newer than "99" so the pumps with those serial numbers have already been updated.

These pumps are easily identifiable from the newer version in that the capacitor attached above the pump motor contains a moulded connector rather than one which is hard wired. (see photograph in attachment to 5973-28)

Solution/Action:
BOC Edwards, the pump Manufacturer, have distributed a letter (see attachment) to all customers who may have purchased this version of pump during the time frame above. The letter details the procedure to follow in order to ensure the safe use and operation of the equipment. However, it is possible that some customers who still have this old style pump may not have received the letter or they have received the letter and are unsure of what to do.

Agilent are asking all Support Providers (CEs, ASPs etc), that on their next service call to customers with 5973A MSDs installed with the indicated version of the pump, to verify that the end user has received and read the BOC Edwards communication. If they have not then the CE/ASP must provide the customer with a copy of the letter and make them aware of the potential risk with the pumps. In addition, the Support Provider may also offer assistance to the customer in the refurbishment.

If the Support Provider finds that the customer has an at risk pump, regardless of the customer's choice of action, then the Support Provider must communicate the following information to Dave McKenica at the Agilent Little Falls Site, either via e-mail or voice mail.
