5975C GC/MSD Installation & Maintenance Videos 

These videos can help you perform common maintenance procedures for the Agilent 5975C GC/MSD. As always, Agilent's Technical Support Team is available to answer any questions you may have regarding installation or maintenance of Agilent products.

Before you start any of the tasks below, please review the important safety precautions on pages 17 and 18 in the 5975 MSD Operation Manual found on the Instrument Utilities CD that was delivered with your system.

Installing the GC Column

1. In the MSD ChemStation or from the GC keyboard, initiate a vent and wait for the process to complete
2. Turn off the MSD
3. Remove the front window cover
4. Open the vent valve
5. Open (flip down) the analyzer cover
6. Open the analyzer
7. Install the column into the transfer line
8. Close the analyzer
9. Turn on the MSD
10. Pump down the MSD
11. Close (flip up) the analyzer cover
12. Install the front window cover

Replacing the Filaments

1. In the MSD ChemStation or from the GC keyboard, initiate a vent and wait for the process to complete
2. Turn off the MSD
3. Remove the front window cover
4. Open the vent valve
5. Open (flip down) the analyzer cover
6. Remove the analyzer
7. Remove the source from the analyzer
8. Remove and replace the filaments
9. Install the source in the analyzer
10. Install the analyzer
11. Turn on the MSD
12. Pump down the MSD
13. Close (flip up) the analyzer cover
14. Install the front window cover 

Cleaning the EI Ion Source

1. In the MSD ChemStation or from the GC keyboard, initiate a vent and wait for the process to complete
2. Turn off the MSD
3. Remove the front window cover
4. Open the vent valve
5. Open (flip down) the analyzer cover
6. Remove the analyzer
7. Remove the source from the analyzer
8. Remove the filaments
9. Identify ion source parts
10. Source parts that need to be cleaned (also available as a downloadable and printable document, 541 kb)
11. Disassemble the EI source
12. Clean the EI source
13. Sonicate the source parts
14. Reassemble the EI source
15. Install the filaments
16. Install the source in the analyzer
17. Install the analyzer
18. Turn on the MSD
19. Pump down the MSD
20. Close (flip up) the analyzer cover
21. Install the front window cover 

Cleaning the CI Ion Source

1. In the MSD ChemStation or from the GC keyboard, initiate a vent and wait for the process to complete
2. Turn off the MSD
3. Remove the front window cover
4. Open the vent valve
5. Open (flip down) the analyzer cover
6. Remove the analyzer
7. Remove the source from the analyzer
8. Remove the filaments
9. Source parts that need to be cleaned (pdf, 541 kb)
10. Disassemble the CI source
11. Clean the CI source
12. Sonicate the source parts
13. Reassemble the CI source
14. Install the filaments
15. Install the source in the analyzer
16. Install the analyzer
17. Turn on the MSD
18. Pump down the MSD
19. Close (flip up) the analyzer cover
20. Install the front window cover 

Replacing the Detector Electron Multiplier Horn

1. In the MSD ChemStation or from the GC keyboard, initiate a vent and wait for the process to complete
2. Turn off the MSD
3. Remove the front window cover
4. Open the vent valve
5. Open (flip down) the analyzer cover
6. Remove the analyzer
   Note: If you have a triple-axis detector, skip to step 6.
7. Remove and replace the horn from the analyzer
   Note: The following steps should be done if you have a triple-axis detector.  Otherwise, skip to step 8.
8. Remove the triple-axis detector horn
9. Install the triple-axis detector horn
10. Install the analyzer
11. Turn on the MSD
12. Pump down the MSD
13. Close (flip up) the analyzer cover
14. Install the front window cover 

Filling the Calibration Vial

1. Remove the front window cover
2. Remove, refill, and install the calibration vial
3. Install the front window cover 

Changing the Mechanical (Roughing) Pump Oil

1. In the MSD ChemStation or from the GC keyboard, initiate a vent and wait for the process to complete
2. Turn off the MSD
3. Remove the front window cover
4. Open the vent valve
5. Drain the oil from the pump
6. Add oil to the pump
7. Turn on the MSD
8. Pump down the MSD
9. Install the front window cover 

Changing the Diffusion Pump Oil

1. In the MSD ChemStation or from the GC keyboard, initiate a vent and wait for the process to complete
2. Turn off the MSD
3. Remove the front window cover
4. Open the vent valve
5. Remove the GC column from the transfer line
6. Move the MSD away from the GC
7. Remove the diffusion pump
8. Drain the oil from the pump and refill
9. Install the diffusion pump
10. Move the MSD back up against the GC
11. Install the column into the transfer line
12. Turn on the MSD
13. Pump down the MSD
14. Install the front window cover
