  • Which points are most important for better use of the ELSD?
      • The nebulizer should always be kept in a good condition, see previous item. Sub-optimum quality of measurement results is most frequently related to insufficient maintenance of the nebulizer.
      • Make sure the negative pressure of the exhaust line is chosen appropriately. If the vacuum is too low, exhaust could enter and pollute the lab. If the vacuum is too strong, air will be drawn in from the drain tube such that liquid is drawn into the heating tube or air bubbles through the siphon both causing bad measurement results. The liquid level in the siphon must be stable and should be equal at both sides.
      • As the ELSD has no built-in leak sensor, users need to check the detector after the installation and after turning on the LC pump for ensuring there is no leak threatening health or lab safety.
      • Make sure the drain and exhaust tube are installed correctly. A drain tube with loops or immersing the liquid waste will create pressure fluctuations in the detector. A strong negative pressure in the exhaust tube or condensation traps in that tube can also bias measurement results.
      • A right choice of temperature and solvent are important for successful measurements.
