QC lab trusts Agilent 1120 Compact LC for critical analyses

Repeatability of results is extremely important for labs that must analyze active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) according to requirements of applicable pharmacopoeias. Because the Agilent 1120 Compact LC produces excellent precision for peak areas and retention times, the quality control (QC) laboratory at D. K. Pharma Chem relies on this instrument for its most important analyses.
Located near Mumbai, India, D. K. Pharma Chem Pvt. Ltd. has more than 25 years of experience in specialty chemicals, fine chemicals, and intermediates. It has more recently begun production of APIs in a state-of the-art plant that is compliant with current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs). Managing Director Rakesh Bakshi explained that his small company generates more than 60 percent of its revenue from exports, and so produces ingredients that conform to the quality standards of pharmacopoeias from around the world.

Precision that exceeds requirements
A dedicated team of analytical chemists ensures that the company’s products meet the highest standards. QC Manager Ashish Sakalkar stated that the lab uses the 1120 Compact LC for analysis of finished products and for validation studies. A veteran of the pharmaceutical industry, he is extremely happy with the performance of the system and pleased that the instrument delivers excellent relative standard deviations (RSDs) – well within the 2% required by the pharmacopoeias.
Bakshi emphasized, “We are getting very good results – very good repeatability. That is important and is why we have chosen this instrument.”
Robust LC helps to keep production running
Rapid turnaround from the QC lab enables uninterrupted manufacturing at D. K. Pharma Chem. Analysts get results quickly with their 1120 Compact LC because the combination of reliability and an integrated autosampler allows them to run samples 24 hours a day with complete confidence. Sakalkar mentioned that additional factors are the ease of maintenance and responsiveness of the Agilent support team. “On the phone, they are solving my problems.”
Bakshi added, “The support people from Agilent are always available any time. Production relies on the QC results. If we have a problem in QC, we can call Agilent for a solution. That’s why Ashish and I are very happy.”
Absolute trust in results
While the 1120 Compact LC is the lab’s first Agilent LC, this small instrument has quickly become the performance leader. Analysts use other vendors’ LCs for less important work, such as analysis of intermediates, but save the 1120 Compact LC for the more critical analysis of API finished products. Bakshi remarked, “We are sure about the results with this system, so we use it when we don’t want to take any chances.”
With the accurate, repeatable data the lab is getting, Bakshi and Sakalkar would definitely buy an 1120 Compact LC again. They expressed satisfaction both with the LC performance and with Agilent overall, including the quality and reliability of Agilent instruments and the excellent support they receive. Bakshi summarized, “We are very much satisfied and happy, and want others to benefit from the 1120 as well. I have already recommended it to two of my friends.”
