The most powerful, most sensitive, most flexible liquid chromatography system is now available: The Agilent 1290 Infinity LC

By Helmut Schulenberg-Schell
Agilent Marketing Manager - Liquid Chromatography

With the introduction of the Agilent 1290 Infinity LC System, Agilent Technologies has provided an LC system that puts an end to the debate about what prepares you best for the future in liquid chromatography: The 1290 Infinity LC is designed to deliver significantly greater power, unmatched speed, and incredible low limits of detection.

The freedom to run the optimum method

Scientists face new analytical challenges every day, and need an LC that keeps pace with rapidly changing needs. The Agilent 1290 Infinity LC System joins our extensive LC portfolio and delivers the industry’s largest analytical power range, enabling you to deploy any particle type, any column dimensions, and any mobile and stationary phases. The system combines ultrahigh pressure up to 1200 bar and high flow rates up to 5 mL/min for maximum chromatographic speed and resolution. You get the highest separating power per time for sub-two-micron and other columns with advanced particles. You can also configure the system for walk-up multi-method operation and automated method development with a choice of eight columns and 26 solvents.

New ZORBAX columns with more peak capacity per second

To complement the superior performance of the 1290 Infinity LC, we have developed ZORBAX Rapid Resolution High Definition (RRHD) columns. The 1.8 µm particle size delivers optimal resolution and peak definition for both simple and complex separations. The improved hardware design and packing processes result in rugged and reliable performance. The ZORBAX RRHD columns are available in popular ZORBAX bonded phases, providing flexibility and scalability between Agilent instruments.

“The Agilent 1290 Infinity LC enables separations in seconds, faster than any instrument before.”
- Daniel Zimmerli, senior technology coordinator at Hoffmann-La Roche in Basel, Switzerland

Maximum sensitivity with Agilent MS systems every day

The 1290 Infinity LC is designed for reduced ion suppression when using any of the Agilent 6000 Series LC/MS systems. The lowest possible delay volume, exceptionally low sample carryover, integrated control and operation with Agilent’s MassHunter Workstation software, and the ability to perform fast, ultrahigh-resolution LC separations contribute to this performance.

The new system works exceedingly well with Agilent Jet Stream thermal gradient focusing technology on our high-end MS systems at higher flow rates. We have been able to identify more compounds in complex mixtures, as well as reduce method times and boost throughput for screening assays.

Latest technology substantially boosts UV sensitivity

Lower limits of detection give you more confidence in your results. The new Agilent 1290 Infinity Binary Pump reduces background noise, to significantly increase the system’s signal-to-noise ratio. Active damping combines innovative pump engineering with embedded firmware to greatly reduce “pump ripple” and associated baseline noise. Agilent’s proprietary Jet Weaver multi-layer microfluidic mixing technology, which combines the industry’s highest gradient mixing efficiency with the lowest delay volume (only 10 µL), further reduces background noise.

In addition, the 1290 Infinity LC System features a new Agilent 1290 Infinity Diode Array Detector (DAD) with at least twice the sensitivity of the nearest rival. The new Max-Light Cartridge Cell with optofluidic waveguides, provides the lowest limits of detection, especially with the 60mm pathlength flow cell.

“Limits of detection for the pharmaceutical impurities were as low as 0.001% relative to the main compound using the new diode array detector. This is more than one order of magnitude lower than required by U.S. FDA.”
- Prof. Pat Sandra of the Research Institute for Chromatography in Belgium

2,000 samples per day

The new Agilent 1290 Infinity Autosampler and Thermostatted Column Compartment allow you to configure the system to run more than 2,000 samples per day. You can get even greater throughput with alternating column regeneration, automatic delay volume reduction, overlapped injections, offline data analysis, and external needle wash capabilities.

Figure 2. A programmable slit for the 1290 Infinity DAD lets you choose a smaller slit for greater spectral quality or a larger slit for greater signal-to-noise. (Click here to see this image larger.)

The autosampler uses the next-generation flow-through design, providing high precision for both very small and large injection volumes without loop changes. Other design enhancements and options conserve valuable sample, reduce carryover, and deliver ultrafast cycle times.

The UHPLC debate is over.

The Agilent 1290 Infinity LC packs more analytical power into a single LC system, with the resolution, sensitivity, and speed that you need for your most exacting analyses. New Agilent ZORBAX RRHD columns complement this LC by providing additional peak capacity and robust performance. If you need an LC that you can rapidly adapt to ever-varying challenges in LC, LC/MS, and UHPLC, consider the Agilent 1290 Infinity LC. For more information, visit our product introduction page.
