7820A GC System: Agilent quality at a budget price

By Shiny Xie

Agilent 7820A GC with 7693A autosampler

Laboratories that run routine analyses by gas chromatography (GC) are held accountable for reliable, accurate results, yet are often pressed to reduce costs. Investments in instrumentation, operator training, and instrument maintenance are areas where cost-cutting is possible, but only if there is no compromise in data quality. Recognizing this need, Agilent recently introduced the Agilent 7820A GC System – an affordable, reliable system that delivers high-quality results, maximizes uptime, and is exceptionally easy to use.

Paired with the optional Agilent EZChrom Elite Compact software, the Agilent 7820A GC System was designed to be easier to install, operate, and maintain than any commercially available GC system. Supporting the four most common GC detectors (flame ionization, thermal conductivity, nitrogen-phosphorus, and micro-electron capture), this dual-column system meets the requirements of most routine capillary and packed-column applications. Sample automation is possible with the optional Agilent 7693A automatic liquid sampler with 16-sample capacity.

Proven technologies for dependable results

The 7820A GC system takes advantage of many of the engineering features and technologies that have made Agilent the industry leader in gas chromatography, such as full electronic pneumatics control (EPC) of all inlets and detectors. You can now set gas flows via the software and save them with your method. Digital electronics keep your setpoints constant from run to run and operator to operator, so you get better retention time repeatability, more consistent results, and less rework.

Simplified operation reduces training

The user interface for the 7820 GC was designed specifically for ease of operation. The innovative five-button keypad on the GC front panel helps to minimize operator errors. With the four-line graphic display, you can easily check run status, as well as any of the GC temperature zones, gas flows, detector signals, and error messages. GC runs can be quickly started or stopped from the front panel. This simple approach reduces training times and helps the infrequent user to become knowledgeable in a short time.

Agilent quality and reliability

Like all Agilent instruments, the 7820A GC is designed and built for long life. The GC underwent 3,600 hours of quality testing and 26,000 hours of performance testing during development. During that time, it also passed over 150 quality production inspections and 58 rigorous safety tests. This instrument meets or exceeds international standards for dependability, ruggedness, and safety.
