HP Expands HPLC Column Selection with ZORBAX®

Hewlett-Packard recently announced the acquisition of Rockland Technologies, Inc. (RTI), a leading research and manufacturing company dedicated to providing analytical chemists and biochemists with high-quality ZORBAX HPLC columns. RTI's facility and all employees, now HP's Little Falls Analytical Division Newport Site, will continue to produce high-purity silica particles, perform proprietary bonding chemistries, and pack superior-quality ZORBAX HPLC columns.

The ZORBAX product line is built on high-purity, robust silica-based stationary phases. Column reproducibility is ensured by the mechanical strength and stability from patented porous silica microspheres. By using only high-purity materials with low metal contamination, ZORBAX packings are ultrapure (>99.995 %) silica, eliminating peak tailing due to solute interaction with trace impurities and more acidic silanols. The silica is also enriched for less acidic associated silanols, also minimizing tailing of basic compounds.

Designed for use at low pH, ZORBAX StableBond columns use a patented bonding chemistry that insures long column life. This chemistry uses unique silanes to sterically protect the siloxane bond at low pH. StableBond phases are extremely acid-stable, even for short-chain CN and C3, allowing a wide range of reliable selectivity. These stable, shorter chain phases are often effectively used for separations not possible using either C8 or C18 phases. StableBond's unique chemistry is stable at low pH even at high temperatures, which can be used to enhance selectivity for particularly difficult separations.

ZORBAX Eclipse XDB reverse-phase columns offer excellent, symmetrical peak shapes and extended column life in the mid-pH range. These columns are recommended for compounds that are labile at low pH, or with methods specifying mid-pH conditions. Eclipse XDB columns combine extra dense bonding to the ultrapure silica surface, followed by endcapping with two different reagents to increase stability while improving peak shape for acidic, neutral, and basic compounds.

For the biotechnology lab, the high efficiency and physical stability of ZORBAX GF-250 and GF-450 size-exclusion columns accommodate high flow rates, greatly reducing analysis time. A patented zirconium-modified silica surface extends the pH range of these columns providing more flexibility. ZORBAX Bio Series columns also include ion exchange and oligo mixed-mode columns.

ZORBAX products address a wide range of HPLC applications, including pharmaceuticals, proteins, peptides, and nucleic acids. In addition to popular StableBond and Eclipse reverse-phase columns, ZORBAX technology is available in normal-phase, size-exclusion, gel-filtration, ion-exchange, and oligo columns.
