Agilent 5100 Platform Wins Award
for Technological Significance
The Agilent 5100 Automated
Lab-on-a-Chip Platform (ALP) has been recognized as one of the top 100
technologically significant new products of 2005 by R&D
Magazine.
Each year, the editors of R&D
Magazine and 50 outside experts evaluate thousands of entries submitted
by companies, research organizations and universities worldwide. Winners of the
R&D 100 Award represent significant advances in technology that provide
simple solutions to complex or long-standing technical or practical problems.
Past winners include the fax machine, the liquid crystal display, and
high-definition television (HDTV). The magazine will feature all of the 2005
winners in its September issue.
The
5100 ALP
is the first fully automated, high-throughput lab-on-a-chip system for basic
life science research and drug discovery. It provides unattended analysis of
thousands of DNA or protein samples per day, replacing tedious, time-consuming
gel electrophoresis methods and thereby facilitating large-scale
genomic
and proteomic
applications.
Additional recognition
In March, Industrie Forum Design
GmbH selected the 5100 ALP for a
2005 iF
Gold Award, which recognizes excellence in industrial design. Agilent was
one of 50 Gold Award winners chosen from more than 2,200 entries in 12
categories. Past winners include the Apple iPod.
